If you recently saw Dr. Bitner discussing hot flashes on The Drew Barrymore Show or in the media, you may be wondering what’s actually happening in your body — and what options exist beyond “just toughing it out.”
Hot flashes and night sweats, also known as vasomotor symptoms, are one of the most common and disruptive symptoms of menopause. They don’t start in the ovaries, they start in the brain.
As estrogen levels decline during the menopause transition, the brain’s temperature-control center (called the thermoregulatory zone) becomes more sensitive. This can trigger sudden waves of heat, sweating, and disrupted sleep, even when the room temperature hasn’t changed.
For years, treatment options were limited. Today, advances in menopause science have led to a new category of non-hormonal medications that target these symptoms at their neurological source.
NKT-targeted therapies (Neurokinin-3 receptor antagonists) work by calming specific signaling pathways in the brain involved in hot flashes. Instead of replacing estrogen, they help regulate the overactive temperature signals that occur when estrogen levels decline.
For women who feel dismissed, confused, or told that hot flashes are “just part of aging,” these therapies represent meaningful progress in menopause care. They expand the range of evidence-based options, allowing treatment to be tailored to a woman’s symptoms, health history, and personal preferences.
As with any prescription medication, NKT-targeted therapies should be prescribed and monitored by a Menopause Society Certified Practitioner or a clinician experienced in menopause management.
