When Menopause Fuels Lipedema and Nobody Tells You
By Celia Egan, MD, MSCP, DABOM | Lipedema Specialist, Researcher, & Menopause Society Certified Practitioner
The Mirror Doesn’t Lie. But Medicine Might Be Missing Something.
You’re doing everything right. Eating better. Moving more. Saying no to bread like it’s your toxic ex. 😏 But still… the fat on your legs won’t budge. The scale’s stalled. Your doctor’s baffled. And you’re stuck in another leggings-only summer, wondering: Is this just aging?
What if I told you—this isn’t just fat? It might be lipedema. And it’s not your fault.
This Isn’t Just Fat. It’s Hormone Fat.
Lipedema is a chronic fat disorder that almost no one talks about, but millions of women live with it every day. It causes painful, fibrotic fat to build up disproportionately on the hips, thighs, butt, and sometimes arms, no matter how “healthy” you eat or how hard you work out.
Most women are told they’re just overweight. Or that this is “just what happens after menopause.”
Wrong. This isn’t regular fat. It’s hormone-triggered, genetically influenced, inflammation-prone fat. And it doesn’t respond to calorie-cutting or cardio. Lipedema often starts or worsens at moments of hormonal upheaval like puberty, pregnancy, and yes, menopause. That’s no coincidence.
Menopause Doesn’t Just Mess With Your Mood
Menopause gets blamed for a lot of things, and for good reason. But what if that stubborn weight gain around your hips, thighs, or arms isn’t just a slower metabolism?
What if it’s Lipedema?
If you’ve noticed:
- Heaviness in your legs
- Pain or aching by the end of the day
- Easy bruising
- Fat that feels rubbery or lumpy, like peas and rice
- Swelling that isn’t helped by elevating your feet
Then it’s time to zoom out. You might be looking at a real medical condition that’s been overlooked or misdiagnosed for years.
Lipedema is not rare. It’s just rarely diagnosed. It’s estimated to affect up to 1 in 9 women, and yet most have never heard of it.
You’re Not Crazy. You’ve Been Gaslit.
Most women with lipedema spend decades being dismissed by doctors who tell them to just “try harder.” Try keto. Try intermittent fasting. Try shame. Spoiler alert: It doesn’t work.
By the time women get to me, they’re not just in pain, they’re grieving. Grieving the years lost to shame, the money spent on diets and detoxes, and the trust broken by a medical system that didn’t believe them.
You’ve probably never even heard of lipedema until now. That’s not on you, that’s on the system. Most doctors don’t know how to recognize it. Medical schools barely teach it. But that’s starting to change. I won’t stop fighting to bring clarity, compassion, and real solutions to women with lipedema who’ve been ignored for too long.
There Is a Better Way
In my practice, at true. Women’s Health, we treat lipedema as the medical condition it is—not a cosmetic issue.
Here’s what a science-based approach looks like
- Medications (like Wegovy® or Zepbound®) to target inflammation and metabolic imbalance
- A nutrition plan designed to calm your lymphatic and hormonal systems—not punish your willpower
- Movement strategies that support your joints and energy—not wear you out
- Compression, lymphatic drainage, and nervous system support that actually help
And most importantly? Validation. Because knowing this isn’t your fault is just as powerful as any prescription.
But here’s what I’ve seen over and over again: women don’t just need information. They need a path forward. That’s why I created a Lipedema Support Community.
Why I Built a Different Kind of Community
Here’s the truth: The internet is full of lipedema spaces that are either wildly medical or wildly chaotic. You’re either lost in dense clinical PDFs or doomscrolling through unmoderated Facebook groups that feel more overwhelming than supportive. As a Lipedema Specialist, Researcher, and Menopause Society Certified Practitioner, I know how critical it is to treat midlife women with both clinical accuracy and deep compassion.
So, I built something different.
The Lipedema Support Community is
- Rooted in evidence-based medicine
- Centered around three real patient journeys (because real stories matter)
- Full of videos, worksheets, reflection prompts, and even sex-positive support
- Moderated by me and our incredible coach, Ginger. She’s a patient and advocate herself.
It’s a place where women feel seen, supported, and scientifically guided. No crash diets. No toxic advice. No BS.
Women Deserve Better Than Shame
If you’ve been asking yourself, “Why isn’t anything working?” You’re not broken. You’re not weak. You’re not lazy. You’re not too far gone. You just might be dealing with a medical condition that’s been ignored for too long, and it’s time we talked about it.
Want to Learn More?
If this sounds familiar, it’s worth taking a closer look. Lipedema is often missed, but once you understand what’s happening, everything starts to make more sense. I’m committed to continuing to build awareness, education, and clinical pathways for women who have been overlooked for far too long. You deserve answers and a plan that actually works for your body. Our team is here for you, and I hope you’ll see us for a consult or join the Lipedema Support Community and connect with me there.
